20GB harddisk

Wird nicht angezeigt, wenn Sie angemeldet sind!

I live in Holland and my Deutch is not so good so I write this in English.

Since 2 monthes I own the GP Sport with blue&me system. It sounds very nice to have all my music with me in the car so I went searching for a good USB harddisk. I read some problems with disks bigger then 20gb so I bought a 20gb usb disk from Toshiba.

I copied some music to the disk and tried to use it in the punto but unfortunately it is not found by the car.

Can someone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong. If this disk is not working which disk can I use. I know USB sticks are working fine but the biggest is only 16gb and that one is really expensive.

Hello and Welcome from

The harddisk doesn't more then 0,5 Ampere.
You need a Stick or a HD with <= 2,5 Watt

We have Threads for your Problem in Germany.

Externe Festplatte???

You can translate it with many Onlinetranslater.

Sorry, my english its very bad and not good.

hi and welcome to these forums !

the problem which seems to bug most of the people is simply that one drive will work, while the other won't.
obviously, since fiat (or better, Microsoft) did not respect the mandatory USB 2.0 specifications, you have to find an external device which will, at no point, need more than 500mAH , as the USB port (both of them, tbh) will never output more than that.
in other terms, a max of 500mAH or 2.5W is given, any harddrive demanding more than that will not work to your satisfaction (or maybe not even at all).
the next point is that u need an external device which will only use ONE connection port.
many external 2.5" devices will use an Y-cable with 2 USB connectors, one dedicated to the data transfer, the other dedicated to the power supply. while there have been a few GP-owners who reported successfully one of these devices by plugging in the data cable into the Blue&Me port, and the other cable into the Fiat-Service plug (also situated in the glovebox), it's only been really a handful of people so far, and it's rumoured to be more "luck" than anything else.

to be honest i haven't heard of anybody using a 1.8" HD on the GP so far, very sadly indeed, as this would have been my first choice aswell (1.8" HD's are known to be way more resistant to shocks and usually should need less power aswell).

i have given up by now the idea of using the GP's USB port for music.
i don't like using voice-recognized commands to select specific tracks etc, since i tend to listen very loud to my music.
i think burning CD's with 200+ tracks on it is way more than enough, and as for the costs of blank CDR's ... i think i don't need to show you the relation between a USB HD (around 40-100€) and the costs of CDR's (about 10-15€ for 100 pieces) ;-)

if you wanna make sure it works, tryout some 20GB 2.5" HDD's from freecom.
they've been known to give the best results so far.

if you ever need any help in english, just ask for it :)
greetinx, m404

@ Netmaster, thanks for the info, I already found the link but I was searching for more detailed info about the problem.

@ m404, Thanks this is the info that I need. I thought that the 1.8" hard disk was using less power then the 2.5" one. It seems that this is not correct. I already found some messages that the freecom 2.5" Hdd will work perfect. Only problem is that I can' find this drive anymore. Now days all hdd's are 40gb or bigger. I found a new hdd but I'm not sure if it will work

Freecom 60gb 2.5" hdd

I understand that the ipod is working fine on the GP. Is this one model of the ipod or can I connect every ipod version? I can buy a 20gb on eBay but then I need to be sure that's its working.

Before the GP I was driving an Ibiza with a MP3 radio. Burning my mp3's on cd's works great but I want to make use of the Blue&Me system. Yes I could use cd's but it sounds so great to have all my albums on one disk with me.

well, i've installed a 100GB Harddiskdrive in my Grande Punto. the problem was the power supply. as m404 already said, the two USB-Ports doesn't provide enough power to run the HDD properly. so i bought an external DC/DC converter to convert the 12V bord tension voltage to the required tension voltage (i think it was about 4.5V).
with this external power supply the HDD works properly.
BTW: i connected the external power supply at the suplly for the cigarette lighter.

i've you're interested in such an solution, i can upload some pictures, which show the installation of the power supply and the HDD
